Terrapin Flyer Live at The Venue on 2024-01-27

On January 27 2024, Terrapin Flyer, the renowned Grateful Dead tribute band, marked a significant transition in their journey, moving from their two-year Thursday residency to a vibrant Saturday night at The Venue in Aurora, Illinois. The air was thick with anticipation and nostalgia as the band prepared to play their first Saturday show in this new setting.

The Venue, recognizing the gravity of the event, had removed tables to accommodate more standing room tickets, creating an enlarged dance floor that was bustling with energy from the get-go. It was a sold-out house, a testament to the band’s enduring appeal and the community’s eagerness for live music.

The lighting, masterfully handled by Charlie Mayton, added a layer of psychedelic charm to the evening. His work with lights not only complemented the music but also enhanced the overall sensory experience, making it a night to remember.

A diverse crowd, ranging from teenagers to grandparents, filled the venue. Among them was an elf-like figure in a poncho, dancing spiritedly up and down the aisles, embodying the free spirit of the Grateful Dead’s legacy. The presence of old friends, mainstays from the Thursday residency, mingled with first-timers at The Venue, creating a unique blend of familiarity and fresh energy.

As a personal touch, my request for “Estimated Prophet” was graciously fulfilled by Mike Cole, adding a special note to the evening. A heartfelt thank you to Gabriella from The Venue for the prime location table, a huge help given the first-come, first-serve basis.

The tracklist was a carefully curated journey through the Grateful Dead’s repertoire:

Set 1 kicked off with an energetic “Feel Like A Stranger,” setting the tone for the night. Classics like “Touch Of Grey” and “Easy Wind” were interspersed with deeper cuts like “Wang Dang Doodle” and “Queen Jane Approximately.” The set concluded with a seamless transition from “Row Jimmy” into “The Music Never Stopped,” leaving the audience yearning for more.

Set 2 opened with a groovy “Shakedown Street,” followed by the much-anticipated “Estimated Prophet,” which then flowed into “Eyes Of The World.” The hauntingly beautiful “China Doll” provided a moment of reflection before ramping up to “One More Saturday Night.” The encore, “US Blues,” was a fitting end to a night of celebration and reminiscence.

The lineup, featuring Josh Olken on lead guitar, Jon Reed on drums, Wavy Dave on bass, Mike Cole on keys, and Doug Hagman on rhythm guitar, was in top form. Each member brought their unique flair while staying true to the essence of the Grateful Dead. Larry Zimmer’s expertise as the FOH Sound Engineer ensured that every note was crisp and clear, enveloping the audience in a wave of nostalgia and euphoria.

In conclusion, Terrapin Flyer’s performance at The Venue was more than just a concert; it was a communal experience, a gathering of old friends and new, united by the timeless music of the Grateful Dead. As they continue to carry the torch of this legendary band, their shows remain a beacon for fans old and new, a reminder of the enduring power of music to bring people together.
